An example opening

Written from a daughter’s answers about her parents, Jean and Alan: forty years married, twenty years running the corner shop, a caravan in Morecambe, and one holiday in France navigated with a map of Spain.

Dad once took Mum on holiday to France and got them lost for six hours. He blamed the map. In fairness to Dad, it was a map of Spain.

I’m Jean and Alan’s daughter, and tonight we’re celebrating their ruby wedding. Forty years of marriage, three children, twenty years behind the counter of the corner shop, and one argument about the thermostat that has never, ever been settled.

How we write an anniversary speech

  • Their story, told properly. How they met, the life they’ve built and the moments that sum them up, all from your answers. Nothing is made up.
  • The right anniversary. Silver, ruby, golden or diamond, we name it and celebrate it.
  • Written for the right speaker: a son, daughter, grandchild or friend, or one of the couple speaking to their other half.
  • Three versions to choose from: mostly funny, funny and heartfelt, or mostly heartfelt.
  • A toast to the couple at the end, plus three delivery tips.

What to include in an anniversary speech

  1. An opening about them as a couple: a habit, a saying or a story everyone at the party knows.
  2. How they met, the story the grandchildren have heard a hundred times.
  3. The life they’ve built: homes, jobs, children, holidays and the odd disaster.
  4. What makes them work, the little everyday things that show the love.
  5. A toast to the happy couple, and to many more years together.

Anniversary names

If you’re not sure which one you’re celebrating, here are the big ones: 25 years is silver, 30 is pearl, 40 is ruby, 50 is golden, 60 is diamond, 65 is sapphire and 70 is platinum. Tell us which anniversary it is and the speech will use the right name. We write for the smaller milestones too, from a 1st to a 20th.

If you’re one of the couple

Choose “One of the couple” when we ask who you are, and the speech will be written in your voice. It will thank everyone for coming, and speak to your other half as well as to the room. It’s a lovely surprise for them, so it’s worth keeping it quiet until the day.

How long should an anniversary speech be?

Three to four minutes is plenty, roughly 400 to 450 words. If several family members are speaking, choose “Short” and keep it to about two minutes each.

Tips for giving an anniversary speech

  • Bring the old photos. If there’s a wedding picture on display, point to it. It gets a laugh and an “aww” every time.
  • Speak to the couple, not just the room, especially during the heartfelt part.
  • Get the glasses filled before you start.
  • Take your time. Forty years deserves more than a rushed three minutes.
