Watching your daughter get married is a lot to feel at once, never mind put into words. Tell us about her, the couple and the memories you treasure, and we’ll write a mother of the bride speech that welcomes everyone, says what’s in your heart, and ends with a toast to remember.

An example opening

Written from a mother’s answers about her daughter Sophie, who met James on a delayed train to Leeds and has, against all the odds, got him to own an ironing board.

Sophie is organised. Properly organised. So it’s only fitting that she met the love of her life on the one journey she couldn’t plan: a delayed train to Leeds, where a young man called James shared his last sausage roll with her.

I’m Sophie’s mum, and before I say anything else, thank you all for being here to celebrate with us. James, welcome to the family. We are all very glad you packed that sausage roll.

How we write a mother of the bride speech

  • Your memories, your words. Every story comes from what you tell us. Nothing is made up.
  • The hosting duties covered: welcoming the guests and thanking everyone who helped.
  • A proper welcome for your new son-in-law or daughter-in-law into the family.
  • Remembering loved ones who can’t be there, briefly and warmly, if you’d like to.
  • Three versions to choose from, a toast to the happy couple, and three delivery tips.

What to include in a mother of the bride speech

  1. An opening about your daughter that makes everyone smile.
  2. A welcome to all the guests, especially the other family.
  3. A story or two about her: one funny, one that shows who she really is.
  4. A warm welcome for her partner, and what you love about them together.
  5. A toast to the happy couple.

When does the mother of the bride speak?

Traditionally the father of the bride speaks first, as the host. Today it’s very common for the mother of the bride to speak instead, or as well, and she usually opens the speeches. If you’re both speaking, agree beforehand who covers the welcome and the thank-yous, so you don’t say the same things twice.

How long should a mother of the bride speech be?

Three to five minutes, roughly 400 to 650 words. If her dad is speaking too, choose “Short” or “Standard” so the speeches don’t run on before the meal.

Tips for giving a mother of the bride speech

  • Print it large, with space between paragraphs, so you can find your place again if emotion catches you.
  • Tuck a tissue in your sleeve or your bag. You’ll probably need it.
  • Look at your daughter during the heartfelt part, and take a breath if you need to. Everyone understands.
  • Practise out loud a few times, so the words feel like yours on the day.
