You’ve been by her side through everything, and now you’ve got to sum it all up in front of a room full of people. Tell us about the bride, your friendship and the stories only you know, and we’ll write a maid of honour speech that makes her laugh and cry in all the right places.
An example opening
Written from a maid of honour’s answers about her best friend since school, Sophie: organised, fiercely loyal, and the woman who finally got James to own an ironing board.
Sophie is the most organised person I know. She has a spreadsheet for her spreadsheets. So when she told me she’d met a man on a delayed train to Leeds, and he’d shared his last sausage roll with her, I knew one thing for certain. That was not in the plan.
I’ve been Sophie’s best friend since school, and I’ve had a front-row seat for all of it. Including James becoming, for the first time in his life, a man who owns an ironing board.
How we write a maid of honour speech
- Your friendship at the heart of it. Every story comes from what you tell us. Nothing is made up.
- Teasing, but kind. Gentle ribbing about the bride, never anything that would embarrass her in front of her family.
- No hen do stories and no exes, however cheeky you ask it to be. What happens on the hen stays on the hen.
- A warm welcome for her partner, and a few lovely words about the two of them together.
- Three versions to choose from, a toast to the happy couple, and three delivery tips.
What to include in a maid of honour speech
- An opening about the bride that everyone who knows her will recognise.
- How you know her, and how long you’ve been friends.
- A story or two: one that makes the room laugh, and one that shows the kind of friend she is.
- The couple: how they met, what makes them work, and a welcome for her new husband or wife.
- A toast to the happy couple.
Does the maid of honour give a speech?
Traditionally, no. But it’s now common at British weddings, and a maid of honour speech is often the one guests talk about afterwards. It usually comes just before or after the best man. Check with the couple where they’d like you in the running order.
How long should a maid of honour speech be?
Three to four minutes, roughly 400 to 450 words. If there are several speeches, choose “Short” and aim for about two minutes. Short and brilliant beats long and rambling every time.
Tips for giving a maid of honour speech
- Practise out loud, a few times, to someone who isn’t the bride.
- Keep tissues handy, for you and for her.
- Look at the bride when you get to the heartfelt part.
- Don’t try to top the best man. Be yourself. Warmth wins over punchlines.
