An example opening

Written from a colleague’s answers about Priya: a senior nurse on Ward 6 for nearly eight years, the unofficial office baker, and the only person who can fix the printer with one kick.

Nearly eight years on Ward 6. Team of the Year. The new starter training she set up from scratch. And yet Priya will always be remembered as the woman who replied-all to the entire trust with her lunch order. Tuna melt, no onions. Thousands of people now know exactly how Priya likes her lunch.

I’m one of Priya’s colleagues, and I’ve been asked to say what we’re all thinking. We have no idea how Ward 6 is going to cope without her. Not least because nobody else can fix the printer with one kick.

How we write a leaving speech

  • Only your stories. Every detail comes from what you tell us. Nothing is invented.
  • Kind to everyone. No digs at the company, the boss or the new employer, and we never guess why someone is leaving.
  • Right for the workplace. Choose “Clean” if the managing director will be there, or “A little cheeky” for drinks with the team.
  • Your own leaving speech too, with the thank-yous and some parting words for the people staying behind.
  • Three versions to choose from, a toast to them and their next adventure, and three delivery tips.

What to include in a leaving speech

  1. An opening the team will recognise: a habit, a catchphrase or a legendary moment.
  2. What they did: the role, how long they’ve been there and what they achieved.
  3. What they’re like to work with, the quirks and kindnesses everyone knows about.
  4. What they’ve meant to the team. This is the bit that makes a leaving speech special.
  5. What’s next, and a toast to their next adventure.

Leaving or retiring?

This page is for someone moving on to a new job, a new city or a new country. If they’re retiring, use our retirement speech writer instead. It asks about their whole career and what they’re planning for retirement.

How long should a leaving speech be?

Keep it short. Leaving dos often happen in a pub after work, with people standing and drinks in hand, so two to three minutes is ideal, roughly 260 to 400 words. Choose “Short” unless it’s a sit-down meal.

Tips for giving a leaving speech

  • Speak early, before people start drifting off for their trains.
  • Have the card and present ready to hand over straight after the toast.
  • Get someone to quieten the room for you. A tap on a glass works wonders.
  • Keep the in-jokes to one or two, so partners and people from other teams feel included too.
