An example opening

Here’s how one best man speech began, written from a few details: the couple met on a delayed train, and the groom shared his last sausage roll.

In 2018, on a delayed train to Leeds, James made the single most romantic gesture of his life. He handed a complete stranger his last sausage roll.

Sophie, you need to understand how big a deal that is. I’ve been James’s best mate since primary school, and in all those years he has never once offered me his last anything. So when I heard about that sausage roll, I knew straight away this was serious.

What you get

  • Three complete versions: funny, heartfelt, and a balance of both, so you can pick one or mix your favourite bits.
  • Your stories, not ours. We build the speech around what you tell us, and never make up anecdotes that someone at the wedding could say never happened.
  • Proper British best man structure: thank-yous, a gentle roast, lovely words about the couple, and a toast to the happy couple.
  • Delivery tips for your speech, such as where to pause for the laugh.
  • A copy by email, and a link to come back to it any time.

What to include in a best man speech

Most great best man speeches follow the same simple shape:

  1. A strong opening line that gets the first laugh and tells everyone who you are.
  2. Thank-yous to the hosts, the bridesmaids and anyone who helped, kept short.
  3. Two or three stories about the groom: one to tease him, one that shows the kind of man he is.
  4. The couple. How they met, what makes them work, and something lovely about the bride or partner.
  5. The toast to the happy couple.

That’s exactly the structure we follow, filled with your stories.

When does the best man speak?

At most British weddings the best man speaks last, after the father of the bride and the groom, usually during or after the meal. Speaking last means you can pick up on things said before you, so listen out for a line you can call back to.

What should I leave out?

Exes, anything from the stag do you wouldn’t say in front of his gran, and in-jokes only three people will get. We leave those out automatically, and you can add anything else to avoid when you fill in your answers.

How long should a best man speech be?

Around five minutes is the sweet spot, which is roughly 600 to 700 words. Long enough to tell two or three good stories, short enough that nobody starts looking at the bar. You can choose short, standard or longer when you fill in your answers.

Best man speech tips

  • Roast, don’t wreck. Tease the groom, but never about exes, the stag do, or anything that would make either family wince. We stick to that, whatever cheekiness level you pick.
  • Specific beats general. “He once got his head stuck in the railings on Blackpool prom” is funnier than “he’s a bit of a liability”.
  • End on the couple. The best speeches finish warm, with something genuine about why they’re right together, then the toast.
  • Practise out loud at least three times. It’s the single biggest difference between a nervous speech and a great one.

Questions

How much does it cost?

Reading the opening is free. Unlocking all three full versions of a wedding speech is £14.99, a one-off payment with nothing else to pay.

Who writes the speech?

Our speechwriting system, which uses artificial intelligence and is built around the traditions of British weddings. It works only from what you tell us, so the more specific your stories, the better your speech.

Can I change it?

Of course. It’s yours. Copy it, edit it, add your own lines. Most people mix bits from two versions.

What if I’m the best woman?

No problem at all. Just choose “Best man or best woman” and tell us who you’re speaking about.
